Battambang is one of the country's more off-the-beaten-track locations but its rural charm, sleepy feel and abundance of French colonial buildings make it a great addition to more in-depth tour to Cambodia. 

A great way to see some of this sleepy market town is to take a boat trip on the Sangker river in the evening. Battambang has traditionally been Cambodia's "rice bowl" and offers some of Cambodia's most archetypal rural scenery, and a trip on the river at sunset provides an insight into local life along the river.
