The trip takes in colonial Hanoi; one of our favourite cities in the region with its lakeside setting and colourful personality. It also includes an overnight junk boat cruise on Halong Bay and a stay at a fantastic eco lodge in Vietnams mountainous northern territory known for its rice fields and diverse ethnic population.

Northern Vietnam is very distinct from the south and central regions and really should be considered a destination in its own right. For those of an adventurous bent, we can extend this trip to include a loop round through the mountains from Sapa and down round to Mai Chau.

DAYS 1, 2 & 3

Arrive in sophisticated Hanoi and transfer to the Maison D'Hanoi for 3 nights. The hotel is situated in the warrens of the old quarter of Hanoi, an excellent base to explore this exciting city. The Old Quarter is home to some superb restaurants and shops where you can get your first taste of Vietnams famously delicious cuisine. We include a full day tour with lunch included.

DAY 4

An early pick up and transfer by road towards Halong Bay. On arrival at Halong Bay you will set sail aboard Bai Tho, a wooden junk. You sail through the magical bay while lunch is served and spend the day visiting its lagoons and beaches. After sunset dinner and drinks are served and you spend the night on-board tucked up in your comfortable cabin.

DAY 5

Greet the day watching the sun rise over the bay. Further cruising around Halong Bay in the morning before transferring back to Hanoi in the afternoon and onto the train station. In the evening you board the train to Lao Cai for Sapa. Overnight will be in a four berth cabin on the train, which will be booked out exclusively for your use.

DAYS 6 & 7

Transfer to Topas Eco Lodge near Sapa for a 2 night stay. The Lodge is just outside of Sapa in a glorious position high in the mountains. It is a fantastic base for exploring the area and they organise some excellent treks in and around the local hill tribe villages. The Lodge is made from sustainable local materials by local people and it is run on admirably sound ecological principles. A real gem of a place.

DAY 8

Transfer back to Lao Cai in the evening and then back to Hanoi on the overnight train. On arrival back in Hanoi connect on to your onward flight or add additional nights in the city.
