Avatar Mountain Suites,
Uthai Thani
Thailand, Around Bangkok
Info : Avatar Mountain Suites
Set amidst large gardens, a spectacular mountain backdrop and sufficiently far from civilisation as most of us know it, the newly opened Avatar Suites provides an opportunity to really get away from it all. About three hours drive north east-of Bangkok in sleepy Uthai Thani province, the resort occupies over 100 acres of countryside.
Its 33 rooms and 11 suites are dispersed around an unusual, two-storey concrete building, shaped like a three bladed fan. Each room has a secluded private balcony with delightful views over the surrounding lagoons and ponds. Constructed from sculpted concrete, the resort is distinctively modern in its aesthetic and unusual in conception. Additional furniture is kept to a minimum, with concrete used to shape cushioned sofas, wardrobes and shelving.
Rooms are split into four categories â Deluxe Suites, Executive Suites, a Honeymoon Suite and Presidential Suite. These vary in size and layout. All have air-conditioning, DVD players, large outdoor cement bathtubs and outdoor dining area. Meals can be taken in the room, on the balcony or in the main restaurant.
The Avatar Spa is a real gem. With wooden panelled rooms it offers a host of Thai and international treatments, including a large Scandinavian sauna and a Korean salted steam room.
A large, suitably abstract swimming pool has been crafted from cement behind the spa. The pool has distinct salt and fresh water areas. There is a modern gym and full range of bikes to explore the countryside. The great library is packed with a variety of books, and a specialist range on design and architecture. The nearby Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular off-site excursions. The resort also has day trips to hidden temples, caves and markets.
Avatar has an organic vegetable garden and much of the produce is served in the restaurant. Guests can turn their hand to a spot of farming and cooking too.
Avatar would be a great place for a wedding, with its privacy, freedom and subterranean night club. The underground area offers entertainment aplenty with jukeboxes, pool tables, darts, a bar and even a fully soundproof karaoke/music room! Similarly, with its intimate, unusual and lavishly furnished board room, Avatar would be a good choice for a small conference or extraordinary business meeting.
Quite how this eccentric hotel was conceived is difficult to imagine, but it works. It is more than merely the sum of its parts and achieves what it set out to do â be unique whilst also indulgent and relaxing.

Rating
Superior - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
