Songkran Water Festival
Bespoke Holiday Itinerary / Experience Tour
Info : Songkran Water Festival
One of Asia's wildest events, Songkran is Thailand's New Year festival of water, taking place each year for roughly four days either side of April the 13th. Based on the belief that water washes away bad luck, the streets of most major towns and cities are transformed into huge water-fighting parades. Trucks, tuk-tuks and motorbikes drive around laden with vats of water and people to throw bucketfuls over streets of revelry. A carnival atmosphere pervades the entire country.
The top places to experience this are Bangkok and Chiang Mai, where the celebrations are considered to be the most wild. Whilst the entire city of Bangkok could see you drenched in water at any given time, Chaing Mai is traditionally regarded as the best place in the Kingdom to celebrate; the walled old city and surrounding motes and waterways host a carnival of parades and processions.
This tour takes you first to Bangkok, before taking the overnight train to Chiang Mai to experience Songkran in the heart of Thailand.
The stylish boutique hotels used are fantastic value and wonderful places to escape the mayhem outside.
Note that we would be delighted to design the tour to suit you - adding on a beach element, a trek towards northern Laos or any number of exciting options.

Day-to-Day Itinerary : Songkran Water Festival
DAYS 1
Depart the UK on your flight to Thailand. The flight leaves from Heathrow, but regional options are available.
DAYS 2 - 4
Arrive in Bangkok and transfer to the Ariysom Villa. As well as being Bangkok's best boutique hotel - you'll find outdoor eateries, street markets, department stores and beauty salons right on the doorstep. You have a Skytrain station nearby, the skytrain system is a much cheaper and quicker way to travel around Bangkok than taxi. Whilst in Bangkok we have included a Klong Boat city tour and a personal guide.
DAYS 5, 6, 7 & 8
Take the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai. You'll have a first class berth and a comfortable and interesting overnight journey - arriving first thing where we'll take you directly to your hotel. You'll be staying in one of Chiang Mai's best hotels - The Chedi, situated on the river on the edge of town. Chiang Mai is an interesting city neatly surrounded by a moat and the remains of a medieval wall. We recommend trying out a Thai cookery course, or taking a leisurely tour of one of northern Thailands most sacred temples, Doi Suthep. There is much to explore in surrounding countryside too from remote treks to elephants and much more.
Chiang Mai is enormous fun during Songkran - but we cannot schedule that - you'll just have to go with the flow - quite literally!
DAYS 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15
A short flight from Bangkok to Phuket and a private car and boat transfers to Koyao Island Resort - quite simply one of Thailand's best hotels. Get away from the Phuket crowds and stay on an unspoilt, peaceful and gorgeous island, just a short boat ride away. There are low key restaurants nearby, diving is possible and the beach is great. 7 nights of sheer bliss!
