Beginning in magical Luang Prabang and then cruising the mighty Mekong towards enchanting Northern Thailand, this amazing itinerary ends with a stay at a luxury Thai beach resort.

With this holiday we have tried to show that you can have the element of adventurous discovery that a holiday to Laos involves, while still finishing in a beach hotel in Thailand: a country that truly understands top level luxury hotels.

From Luang Prabang you’ll do some thorough exploring of this incredible city and the surrounding countryside – while the cruise up the Mekong allows you to experience the quieter and rural side of laos. The overnight stops are in two riverside lodges which offer a real insight into the country.

Our holidays are privately guided throughout – with all the transfers and activities being guided by our expert and experienced guides. We always build in an element of independence too and try to avoid too many early starts and long days. We believe a holiday like this should be an incredible experience – but a fun one too!

DAYS 1, 2 & 3 - LUANG PRABANG

Mysterious, charming and deeply evocative of a bygone age, Luang Prabang is a seductive place. You’ll get to experience the allure first hand either walking or using bicycles to explore the city. You’ll stay for 3 nights at the wonderful Maison Souvannaphoum.

At dawn hundreds of saffron robed monks move silently through the streets to collect alms. Your guide will take you to watch and explain the background behind this ritual which is still very much part of everyday life in Laos.

You will journey out of Luang Prabang to visit Kuang Sii Waterfalls - through scenic Laotian countryside and with many ethnic minority villages along the way. There is time to explore and, if water levels permit, to enjoy a refreshing dip in the falls. These beautiful falls cascade over many tiers and down several hundred feet into a series of turquoise pools. The water here has a clear blue-green tint due to the high mineral content.

DAY 4 - LUANG PRABANG TO KAMU LODGE

After breakfast at your hotel, transfer with your guide to Luang Prabang Jetty and embark for a boat trip on the Mekong River to Kamu Lodge. You may choose to relax, or participate in great variety of activities on offer – such as cycling or exploring the traditional ways of living. Meals and accommodation at Kamu Lodge

DAY 5 - LUANG SAY CRUISE

At around 11am you will board the Luang Say boat and travel up the Mekong River to Pakbeng. Arrive Pakbeng before sunset and check-in at Luang Say Lodge. Dinner on the terrace, overlooking the Mekong River. Accommodation at Luang Say Lodge.

DAY 6 - LAOS TO THAILAND

After, an early walk to Pakbeng market where people from the surrounding village of minorities exchange goods, board the boat for the last leg of the cruise at around 8am. Stop en route to observe rural life along the Mekong and discover minority tribes. Lunch on-board, before continuing on to Houeisay. Here you cross the border with your Thai guide and driver who will transfer you overland to the beautiful Anantara, which sits on a ridge overlooking Myanmar and Laos.

DAYS 7 & 8 - THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

Rescued and retired working elephants are cared for at The Anantara’s elephant camp. You can arrange a number of elephant treks in the vicinity and the hotel also has mountain bikes for rent. There are many trails for hiking and trekking. The resort also has a fantastic pool and an excellent spa.

DAYS 8, 9, 10 & 11 - CHIANG MAI

Your driver will transfer you overland to Chiang Mai through beautiful scenery visiting Akha and Yao hill tribe villages along the way. Arrive in Chiang Mai for your stay at the Tamarind Village.

Chiang Mai is small city sitting in a beautiful valley, surrounded by farm orchards and forested mountains. You’ll have time to explore bustling markets, handicraft stalls and mountain top temples independently and to enjoy the local cuisine.

DAYS 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16 - RELAXING AT THE SOUTHERN BEACHES

Following a short flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket you’ll be transferred to your choice of either the Sarojin in Khao Lak or The Pimalai on the island of Koh Lanta. Both are fabulously luxurious beach resorts located on two of our favourite beaches. Arrange for a consultant to call you who has visited these resorts and who can help you decide which is most suitable for you.
