Historical Cambodia
Bespoke Holiday Itinerary / Experience Tour
Info : Historical Cambodia
Built on the grand beginnings of the Khmer Empire, Cambodia has had an often troubled history. This tour gives you the opportunity to explore this history and see its results. You will be blown away by the Angkorian Temples while the evidence of genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge is still shocking and raw. Although you might wish to miss this element we should warn you that for Cambodians this period is still very much part of every day life.
Due to the lack of modernisation in large parts of Cambodia over the last 30-40 years there is also a fascinating insight into French colonial architecture and way of life. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to remain the same for much longer!
Cambodia has a short coastline, with untouched islands, great diving and sleepy towns well worth exploring.
Above all, the Cambodian people are some of the most welcoming and hospitable you will find anywhere in the world.

Day-to-Day Itinerary : Historical Cambodia
DAYS 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 SIEM REAP
4 nightsâ accommodation at Pavilion D'Orient and 3 days with a guide and driver exploring the breath taking temples of Angkor. Youâll visit the most famous temple Angkor Wat as well as Angkor Thom, Bayon and also Ta Prohm. Ta Phrom is overgrown with the roots and limbs of Banyan Trees and famously featured in the Tombraider films! There will also be plenty of time to explore some of the more remote temples and visit the floating villages on the Tonle Sap. For those more active travellers we can arrange bike tours which are a great way to get away from the crowds!
DAYS 5, 6 & 7 BATTAMBANG
After lunch you will be transferred to Cambodiaâs second city of Battambang, for two nights at the stylish colonial style La Villa hotel. From your hotel you will be able to walk into the heart of town to explore the bustling market and colonial architecture while experiencing some of the best street food in Cambodia and a sunset ride on a famous bamboo train into the surrounding paddy fields.
DAYS 7 & 8 PHNOM PENH
Following a late morning transfer you will have the first of two nights to experience the fascinating recent history of Cambodia and its capital Phnom Penh. During a morning tour of the city you will visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, Emerald Buddha and the National Museum. Accommodation at Villa Paradiso.
DAY 8, 9, 10 & 11 KEP
Following the tour of Phnom Penh, your driver and guide will transfer you to the sleepy seaside resort of Kep, the seaside resort of choice during the French colonial period that is only now beginning to be restored to its former glory. Right up until the mid 1990s the area was caught up in the civil war and it was only re-opened to tourists at the turn of the century. You will stay at the restored villas of Knai Bang Chatt, who have a fascinating history of their own. During a three night stay you will be able to eat at the famous crab market, take a boat trip to Rabbit Island, wander amongst deserted villas and walk in the surrounding jungle clad hills.
DAYS 11 & 12 KAMPOT
A relaxed departure for the short transfer to Kampot, stopping at the temple caves at Phnom Chnork. Kampot is a provincial market town adorned with colonial architecture. It is a small and quiet town and the riverfront is a very atmospheric place to enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the nearby Bokor Mountain. This is a place where time has stood still! Accommodation at Rikitikitavi.
DAYS 13 & 14 PHNOM PENH
A morning transfer back to Phnom Penh for an afternoon tour of the notorious Tuol Sleng Prison and Choeung Ek. Tuol Sleng is a former school that was converted into the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the Khmer Rouge. Choeung Ek (better known as the killing fields) was used by the Khmer Rouge as a mass-grave and execution site. Today both of these sites are a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Khmer Rouge. The tour is a very moving reminder of the horrors faced by Cambodians between 1975 and 1979. Accommodation at The 252.
