Mrauk-U

Info : Mrauk-U

One of Burma's more off-the-beaten-track destinations is Mrauk-U in the north west of the country, near the border with Bangladesh. Mrauk-U was the last capital of the unified Rakhine (Arakanese) kingdom from 1433 to 1784. Rakhine state has always been geographically isolated and Rakhine people have always had a strong and unique cultural and linguistic identity. Mrauk-U is reached by 6 hour boat journey from Sittwe and the location of the town is beautiful - surrounded by rich lush rolling hills and wetlands too. Mrauk-U is home to a number of unique and atmospheric ancient temples including the Shite-taung and Koe-taung Paya (Temple of 80,000 Buddha images and temple of 90,000 Buddha images).

For those looking to visit a remote and remarkable corner of the world, including 2 or 3 nights in Mrauk-U will be a great addition to any Burma itinerary.
