Climbing Mount Popa

Info : Climbing Mount Popa

Just outside of Bagan lies the extinct volcano of Mount Popa. A 5 hour trek to the summit brings you through dense jungle inhabited by exotic flora and fauna and full of butterflies as large as handkerchiefs. Although the trek is tiring it is suitable for even beginners to hiking and the view from the summit across the rolling hills and valleys studded with golden pagodas is really worth the effort. A particular highlight is the Popa Taungkalat, a monastery built atop a rocky outcrop in an extraordinary feat of engineering. During your climb you will have a local trekking guide from a nearby village, who often what they lack in English language they will make up with enthusiasm for the environment.

The trek up Mount Popa can be easily added to any stay in Bagan.  Highly recommended.
